Diabetes Symptoms

Diabetes is a disease that affects millions of people in the nation. When a person’s body has trouble making or regulating the amount of glucose in the blood, it’s called diabetes. Many times people don’t know they have this condition so it goes untreated. The reason it’s so difficult to diagnose is because the symptoms in the early stages of diabetes seem harmless or normal. Therefore, people don’t usually seek treatment.

It’s important for this medical condition to be diagnosed early in order to decrease the risk of developing serious complications. Below is a list of the most common symptoms of diabetes and a brief description of each.

• Excessive Thirst or Hunger – One sign of diabetes is having an uncontrollable thirst where you can never seem to get enough to drink. Your body feels dehydrated because the kidneys are drawing extra water from the blood to help dilute the excessive amounts of glucose.

• Frequent Urination – Going to the bathroom excessively is a symptom of this disease. Many times people think they are urinating more often simply because they are drinking more but the two actually go together. When the body has too much glucose the kidneys try to draw extra water from the blood to dilute the glucose and this keeps you running to the bathroom.

• Excessive Weight Loss – Weight loss can also be a sign of this disease especially if you have type 1 diabetes. This is because the pancreas will stop making insulin and the body is searching for energy from anywhere it can get it. Therefore, the person may loss weight fast. It’s not as noticeable when a person has type 2 diabetes.

• Numbness In Hands, Feet and Legs – When high levels of glucose in the blood begin to damage the nervous system, neuropathy can occur. This can happen slowly over time causing the numbness in these body parts.

• Fatigue – Diabetes causes a person to feel tired and run down because the body is not producing the energy needed to perform normal everyday tasks.

• Overeating – When a person has high levels of insulin they will feel hungry all the time because insulin stimulates hunger.

Blurred vision, regular infections, dry itchy skin, bruises and sores that won’t heal properly are also symptoms of diabetes. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, then it’s advised that you see your health care provider for a check-up. The sooner diabetes is diagnosed the faster and easier it will be to get it under control.
