Lymphoma

Cancer, as we all know, is a horrible disease with a high mortality rate. The good news is that doctors continue to do research and are expanding that mortality rate as they find treatments to extend remission periods and contain the disease in its patients. Lymphoma is another form of cancer that occurs in the lymphatic system. This system is part of our natural immune system to aid our body in fighting diseases.

When an individual is infected by this condition, their white blood cells are taken over by this disease and eventually, their body can no longer naturally fight off infections and diseases. This condition is not limited to any one area of the body like some other forms of cancer because the lymphatic tissue that it affects is just about everywhere in our bodies. Once someone has developed this condition, it can literally spread over the entire body.

This disease is more common in adults, but there are cases of children getting it. The individuals as the highest risk for lymphoma are those with:

• HIV Infections
Crohn’s Disease sufferers
• Exposure in large quantities to pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer and solvents
• White males over the age of 50
• Patients who are currently on an aggressive treatment of immune system suppressing drugs
• Patients with a history of Helicobacter pylori gastritis.

Some of the common symptoms of lymphoma would be things like a quick weight loss, constant fatigue, skin irritation, fever, overwhelming night sweating and chest or abdominal pain. Some of these symptoms are associated with much less serious diseases and infections, but it is always best to see a doctor to play it safe if you are concerned that you may have some form of lymphoma.

If you are in danger of having lymphoma, doctors will order a long series of tests: things like exams, x-rays, MRI’s, CAT scans and biopsies.

If you are diagnosed with lymphoma, there are several different types and stages of the disease. Depending upon what you are actually diagnosed with, will determine the course of treatment that your doctors will prescribe.
