Rubella- Basic Info and Dangers
Rubella can be a very devastating virus. It is sometimes referred to as the German measles. Most people do not
realize that Rubella and the measles are two completely different illnesses. It is a
fact that these two illnesses do have some similarities that exist between them but they should not be confused
with the same thing.
The difference here is that rubella and the measles are caused by two very different types of viruses. One
similarity that is shared between these two conditions is that they both are viral infections. In addition, both of
these viruses are characteristic of a red rash that appears on people that do in fact, have the condition. Rubella
and the measles also share another major difference.
It is important to note that rubella is not nearly as lethal as the measles. That is how the nickname of the
three day measles was given to rubella. There is one situation where Rubella can in fact be lethal. In the case of
a pregnant woman contracting the disease of rubella, the disease can cause the fetus to die or create serious birth
defects.
Rubella Symptoms
There are many common symptoms that are associated with Rubella. The problem with Rubella is that many of the
signs are difficult to notice because of their subtlety. In the case that signs or symptoms do occur they will
usually appear some time between two and three weeks after exposure to the Rubella virus.
Once the symptoms are available they can last up to three days. Some of these symptoms can include, but are not
limited to, a moderate fever, a headache as well as inflammation of the eyes. Rubella is a virus that can spread
from one person to another person very easily. It is sometimes spread through kissing and can also be spread
through saliva. Coughing can also contribute to the spread of the Rubella virus. The best way to protect yourself
from the Rubella virus is by getting vaccinated.
Rubella Vaccine
There is actually a vaccination that can prevent the contraction of Rubella. This Rubella vaccination is given
to many children in the United States. In fact, the vaccination is usually given to children twice before they
enter school. As a result, the disease has been declared non existence in the United States. It is important to
note that they still recommend getting vaccinated to play things on the safe side.
