Tetanus
Tetanus - What You Need to Know
Tetanus can be an extremely serious disease if it is not treated properly. The disease itself is a bacterial
disease that is caused by a toxin. If not treaty properly this toxin leads to stiffness of the jaw as well as many
other muscles. Tetanus is an extremely serious disease because it can often result in extreme muscle spasms,
difficult of breathing, and in the end threaten your life. Tetanus can be fatal in some cases so it must be treated
immediately. The bacteria that causes this illness is often found in the dirt or soil, but it can be found in tons
of other places. Things can go south if this specific type of bacteria gets into a wound. That’s the only situation
where this toxin will be developed in the blood stream.
There are several different symptoms and warning signs that are associated with this illness. These symptoms
usually appear anywhere from two days to two weeks after having the toxin in the bacteria in a wound. The average
incubation period for tetanus is approximately eight days. One of the most common symptoms that are associated with
tetanus are spasms in the jaw, neck, as well as other muscles. Having stiff muscles throughout the body is also
another symptom of this condition. The last symptom that is most common with tetanus is difficult of breathing, but
that is only in severe cases. Sometimes other symptoms such as fever and muscular irritability can develop.
Sometimes it can be difficult knowing when to see a doctor. If you ever get a wound that is dirty and you have
not gotten a booster shot in the last five years you should always seek medical attention. You should get a booster
shot at least every five years. Many people go as much as ten years without getting a booster shot. This is a big
mistake because these people are more prone to getting tetanus. There is no need to be worried about tetanus
because it can be treated if you take the proper steps. Treating tetanus is significantly more difficult if you do
not have a tetanus booster shot. If you get tetanus and you do not have a booster shot your situation could turn
bad quickly. The only way to really prevent yourself from getting a bad case of tetanus is by getting a booster
shot at least once every five years for tetanus.
