What Are the Symptoms of Syphilis?

Syphilis symptoms vary.

After syphilis germs are transmitted from one person to another, it may take 9 days to 3 months for symptoms to appear.

The first symptom of symphilis is a often chancre, which is a form of ulcer. It can show up on any part of the body, but it's more common on the part that has been exposed to the partner's ulcer (usually the penis, the vulva, or the vagina). A chancre generally appears within two to six weeks.

As syphilis progresses, other symptoms may begin to appear:

  • brown sores about the size of a penny on the skin.
  • mild fever,
  • fatigue,
  • headache,
  • sore throat,
  • patchy hair loss,
  • swollen lymph glands throughout the body.

These symptoms may be very mild and will sometimes disappear without treatment.
